في القرن السابع عشر الميلادى ضربت العديد من الظروف القاسية الأراضى المصرية فتدهورت الأحوال الإقتصادية وتفشى الطاعون فى البلاد وإنتشرت السرقات والتسول وما إلى ذلك من مظاهر الإندحار والضعف الذي أصاب البلاد. وفي هذه الفترة التاريخية وبالأخص ما يقترب من الخمسة و ثلاثين عاماً تنحصر بين العام1665 وحتى 1701م قام (محمد بن محمود) بتدوين وتأريخ كافة الأحوال فى كتابة هذا، والذى حققه الدكتور (بشير زين العابدين) حيث نتعرف من خلاله على تفاصيل وأخبار هذه المرحلة وخاصة مظاهر سيطرة العسكر على الشئون الإدارية والملاية وإزدياد نفوذهم فى البلاد، وقسمت فصول الكتاب تبعاً لكل وإلى على حدة والتى بدأت فى ولاية عمر باشا ووقعة الضرب.
