لكتاب "عيون التاريخ" قيمة فنية أدبية وشعرية فضلاً عن قيمته التاريخية وهو مشتمل على دور وقلائد وفوائد كثيرة. يعرض أحداث التاريخ الإسلامي من سنة 133ه لغاية 170ه الذي تشتمل على خلافة السفاح من حين استقلاله بالبلاد وخلافة أخيه المنصور وخلافة المهدي والرشيد والأمين إلى أوائل المأمون.
بالإضافة إلى قيمة هذا الكتاب التاريخية والأدبية فإن له قيمة فنية شعرية، حيث ضمن مصنفة أبياتاً شعرية لم تتم نسبتها إلى أصحابها إلا في كتاب ابن شاكر هذا. كما ضمنه أيضاً بعض القصائد المشهورة النادرة. إلى جانب ذلك فإن ابن شاكر كان يهتم لدى ترجمته للكثيرين من الأدباء الشعراء، أو الأدباء أن يذكر أسماء الكتب والرسائل والدواوين التي ألفوها، حيث يذكر جميع الكتب والرسائل التي ألفها الجاحظ وهي التي قد ضاع أكثرها ولم يبقى منها إلا القليل. كما ذكر أيضاً جميع أسماء الكتب التي وضعها المدائني وقد تجاوز عددها المئة. وهذه الطريقة ذاتها اتبعها ابن شاكر في كل تراجمه تقريباً. ومن هنا يتأكد لنا أن قيمة كتاب "عيون التواريخ" من خلال هذه الناحية والمنطلق لا تقل عن قيمة كتاب "الفهرست "لابن الزعيم" أو كتاب "معجم الأدباء" لياقوت الحموي.
