ولد وليام جيمس في مدينة نيويورك في الحادي عشر من يناير عام 1842.
وهو فيلسوف أمريكي ومن رواد علم النفس الحديث.
كتب كتبا مؤثرة في علم النفس الحديث وعلم النفس التربوي, وعلم النفس الديني والتصوف, والفلسفة البراغماتية.
وكان شقيق الروائي المعروف هنري جيمس وأليس جيمس كاتب اليوميات.
يُعتبر جيمس واحدا من المفكرين الرواد في أواخر القرن التاسع عشر, ويعتبره الكثيرون أعظم الفلاسفة المؤثرين الذين أنجبتهم الولايات المتحدة, فيما اعتبره آخرون "أب علم النفس الأمريكي".
بالإضافة إلى أنه يعتبر مع "تشارلز ساندرس بيرس" و"جون ديوي", من المؤسسين الكبار للفلسفة البراغماتية.
توفي جيمس في السادس والعشرين من أغسطس عام 1910.
Book Description
دعي جيمس عام 1901 إلى جامعة إدنبره في اسكتلندا لإلقاء محاضرات في مسألة الدين. ولم يكن يُعرف وقتئذٍ عنه سوى أنه أحد أهم فلاسفة أمريكا وأحد أكبر المشتغلين بعلم النفس. غير أن المفاجأة هي أن محاضراته تلك ستكون نقدًا صارمًا للمقاربات العلمية الوضعية والسيكولوجية والفلسفية التي تنظر إلى الدين بمنظار التجاوز، حتى صارت بفعل النقد الصارم الذي وجّهه إليها جيمس مقاربات ساذجة لم تدرك قيمة الدين، ولا حقّقت المدخل المنهجي المناسب لدراسته. قدّم جيمس في محاضراته هذه طريقة منهجية غير مسبوقة في كيفية تناول التجربة الدينية وفهمها. وبمجرد صدور تلك المحاضرات في شكل كتاب، أحدثت دويًّا هائلاً في الدراسات الفلسفية والدينية، حيث تنادى المهتمون بإشكالية الاعتقاد الديني، في مختلف الثقافات، إلى ترجمته ونقله. وقد تأخرت للأسف ترجمة هذا المتن الثمين إلى اللسان العربي، لذا عزم مركز نهوض على سدّ هذا النقص، وهو على يقين بأن الكتاب سيكون إضافة نوعية للثقافة العربية.
