يدرس هذا الكتاب الموضوع الادبى الشعرى وهو الايقاع فى شعر احمد شوقى امير الشعراء المصرى المعروف والايقاع هى الموسيقى فى الشعر الذى كتبه الشاعر وقد اختار المؤلف فى العصر الحديث دراسة شعر شوقى بالذات لانه قد اتيحت له الفرصة كما يرى للتجديد بقدر اكبر مما نهيات به للبارودى مثلا لاختلاف الظروف والشخصيات ولكنه كان تجديدا محافظا تجديدا ليس فيه انفلات ولا ثورة بقدر ما فيه من الطرق فى حين كان البارودى يحيى الشعر الذى خنقته عصور المماليك والترك حتى بداية عصر النهضة ويعيد بناءه فجاء شوقى وقد وجد البناء مكتملا فاكمل البناء وجدد الاركان بقدر ما تحتمل اعمدة البناء بحيث لا تصنيع معالمه فينكره الناس .
