ليست العبرة، حسب رأينا، في توفر هذا الجهاز النظري الغربي أو ذاك بقدر ما هي في القدرة على تمثل الوافد من النظريات وعلى إجرائه على الرواية العربية إجراء يأخذ بعين الاعتبار أنه لم يستمد منها ولم يوضع لها وأن دراسة النصوص العربية تقتضي الإصغاء إليها والبحث عن خصوصياتها الممكنة لا في مستوى المضامين فهذا من تحصيل الحاصل بل خاصة في مستويي البنية والتشكيل... وسيكون اهتمامنا بما يؤسس خاصة هذه الرواية. ونعني بنيتها التي ستكون مدخلنا إلى المضامين. فالبنية، أي شبكة العلاقات القائمة بين العناصر المكونة للرواية، تمكننا من وصف العمل من الداخل وتجنبنا الإسقاط. وحتى لا تكون دراستنا شكلانية صرفًا ارتأينا دراسة الدلالة. ونعني بها، أساسًا، دلالة البنية. وهي دلالة تسمح لنا بمحاورة النص وتلافي التماهي معه والذوبان فيه. فلا تكون القراءة جديرة بهذا الاسم إلا إذا تمكن القارئ، في لحظة ما من لحظات مقاربة النص، من رسم مسافة بينه وبين هذا النص تتيح له محاورته ومساءلته اعتمادًا على بنيته وما يتضمنه من مصرح به ومسكوت عنه.
