امتدت حياة الحسن البصري في عصرين من عصور الأدب العربي، هما عصر صدر الإسلام، والعصر الأموي (21-110ه)؛ إذ هيأ الله سبحانه وتعالى له ايدي الصحابة لتحتضنه، وترعى طفولته وشبابه، فاتسعت آفاقه، وكثر علمه على أيديهم، فكانوا أصحاب الفضل الأول في تكوين شخصيته الفذة، وكان لوالديه واشتراكه في الحروب، والرحلات التي قام بها أثر في نفسه وعلمه، وأثرت أحداث تلك الحقبة في تصرفه إزاء نفسه والناس، وإزاء الولاة الأمراء. ولما كانت البصرة هي مهبط شبابه، ومسكن رجولته، فقد نسب إليها، وعاش فيها، ووافته منيته فيها، ثم دفن في ثراها تاركاً وراءه الذكر الطيب، والعلم الواسع، والموعظة الحسنة. وأكثر ما يلفت الإنتباه فيما ترك الحسن من كنوز علمه، نثره الذي ضم عصارة أفكاره، وخلاصة تجاربه، وثمرة إيمانه قدمها إلى الناس الذين أحبوه، وسعوا خلفه في طريقه الإيماني.
ومن أبرز النتائج التي توصل إليها هذا الكتاب هي تسليط الضوء على الحسن البصري بوصفه ناثراً بديع الأسلوب، يستحق نثره التأمل والدراسة بعد أن كان الإهتمام منصباً على أفكاره، وآرائه وعقيدته، إذ استقطبت هذه الجوانب اهتمام الباحثين، وتمحورت عليها ابحاثهم ودراساتهم، غير أن أحداً منهم لم يدرس نثره بصورة مستقلة، بهذا الشمول.
وبعد أنت تتبع المؤلف خصائص نثر الحسن الفنية، يمكن القول إنه كان أحد أعلام النثر العربي، بل كان له شأن فيه، ومكانة مرموقة، حتى لقد عرف الناس مذهبه في نثره، فكانوا يميزون أقواله، وإن لم تقترن بإسمه، أو تنسب إليه، وقد ساق لنا الجاحظ دليل ذلك، فقال: "بينما رجل يطوف بالبيت؛ إذ سمع رجلاً يقول: عجباً لقوم أمروا بالزاد، ونودي فيهم بالرحيل، وحبس أولهم على آخرهم، فليبت شعري ما الذي ينتظرون؟ فقال: فقلت في نفسي، هذا الحسن".
