يدور البحث في هذا الكتاب حول ملامح الفكر الفلسفي والديني في مدرسة الإسكندرية القديمة. ويتكون البحث من خمسة فصول وخاتمة بالإضافة إلى ثبت بأهم المصطلحات التي وردت في ثنايا البحث. يدور الفصل الأول في هذا الكتاب حول الملامح العامة للحياة العلمية والفكرية والدينية في القرون الخمسة الأولى من الميلاد؛ وفيه عرض المؤلف للملامح المميزة للعلم في تلك الفترة بالإضافة إلى خصائص الحياة الدينية وأهم الأحداث التي شهدتها الإسكندرية في تلك الحقبة. وفي الفصل الثاني يلقي الضوء على الحركة العلمية التي شهدتها بعض حضارات الشرق القديم في مصر وبابل والهند. وانتقل بعد ذلك إلى الحديث عن أهم مظاهر تلك الحركة العلمية في الإسكندرية إبان العصر البطلمي مشيراً إلى علمائها في تلك الفترة؛ عارضاً لأهم العلوم التي ازدهرت في الإسكندرية إبان العصر الروماني كالطب والفلك والرياضة وغيرها. وفي الفصل الثالث عرض المؤلف لأهم الاتجاهات الفلسفية التي ظهرت في الإسكندرية كالفيتاغورية الجديدة، والأفلاطونية الجديدة ومن ثم استعرض وباستفاضة المذاهب الفلسفية عند كل من أفلوطين وفورفوريوس ونومينيوس وأتباعه. ومن ثم قدم المؤلف في الفصل الرابع صورة دقيقة للحياة الدينية في القرون الخمسة الأولى من الميلاد، عارضاً لأهم الصراعات التي احتدمت بين اليهودية والوثنية، والمسيحية، كما عرض لأهم المدافعين عن المسيحية في مواجهة الوثنية، ويأتي الفصل الأخير بعرض متنوع للآداب والفنون المختلفة في مدرسة الإسكندرية ويركز فيه المؤلف على الأدب البطلمي وأهم دراساته مع ذكر نماذج من الشعر والنثر. بالكتاب جهد بالغ، ومنهج واضح، وهو يعرض لمساحات طويلة من الفكر والفن والعلم والدين.
