إن واحدًا من التحولات اللسانية الكبيرة في القرن العشرين تمثَّلَ – على المستوى المعرفي- بإعادة العناية الفائقة بالعلاقة الرابطة بين اللسان والإنسان، التي كانت البنيوية السوسيرية قد أقصتها عن البحث اللساني، بوصف تلك (البنيوية) منهجيةً بحثية غير عابئة بالقيمة المهمة لأثر تلك (العلاقة الرابطة) في توجيه إحالات العلامات السيميائية، ما تسببَ في إفقارِ المباحث الدلالية في الدراسات اللسانية، والإسرافِ في إحداث القطيعة المعرفية بين اللسان وواقعه البشريالثقافي؛ لكن التطورات اللاحقة أوجدت أساسًا منهجيًّا جديدا للدراسات اللسانية، طفَقَ يعملُ على تخطّي معضلة تضييق المنهجية البنيوية للبحث اللساني، فصارت اللسانيات ترى في اللغة نظاما سيميائيا لا يمكن دراسته دراسةً منفصلة عن شروطه الحياتية، وعن أهدافه في تحقيق التواصل الاجتماعي والثقافي، فظهرت – على مدار القرن العشرين - جهودٌ علمية شتى، انتظمت في حقل (اللسانيات البينية)، لتعيد النظر في مسألة العلاقة الرابطة بين اللغة والإنسان والحاضنة البشرية
