يعد هذا الكتاب الدراسة الأكاديمية الأولى من نوعها التي تتناول الشبك كجماعة إثنية لها أصولها القومية ولغتها الخاصة، منضماً إلى (سلسلة دراسات الأقليات في العراق).
صدرت العديد من الدراسات عن الشبك أثارت من الآراء ما كان بعيداً عن نزوع الدراسة الحقلية (الميدانية) إلى دراسة المجتمع عن قرب، مثل كتاب أحمد حامد الصراف، كما نشرت كتابات حديثة بعد العام 2003 مثل كتاب القاضي زهير كاظم عبود (الشبك في العراق9ن وكتاب أحمد شوكت (ألشبك... دراسة تأريخية إجتماعية في أصولهم ولغتهم وموطنهم) وغيرها، حاولت تجاوز التنميط السابق للشبك.
إلا أن الكتاب الحالي يمثل دراسة علمية أكاديمية تحدد طبيعة المجتمع الشبكي، وتقدم وصفاً علمية وتفسيراً لأوضاعهم، من خلال رؤية علمية معمقة لأصولهم ولغتهم ومعتقدهم وأعرافهم وتقاليدهم، وإزالة الغموض والتشويه الذي لحق بهم.
يكشف هذا الكتاب عن طبيعة مجتمع الشبك، في ستة فصول بالإضافة إلى مدخل ركز على أصل الشبك، ولغتهم، ومعتقدتهم، وقد تطرق بشكل تفصيلي إلى النسق الأيكولوجي، من خلال الطرق إلى الموقع والبيئة والمناخ ومصادر المياه والسكان واللغة والبيت والملابس، وطرق المواصلات، وركز في فصل آخر على النسق الإقتصادي، متناولاً حيازة وملكية الأرض، وأنماط النشاط الإقتصادي، وخصص فصلاً مسقلاً لدراسة النسق القرابي، متناولاً القرابة والأسرة، والزواج، والعادات والتقاليد والختان، والموت.
وتناول فصل آخر النسق السياسي الذي تضمن القانون العشائري (العرفي) والإدارة والحكومة، واحتوى الفصل الأخير على تحليل مظاهر التغير الإجتماعي.
