Book Description
وُلد كارلو كلوديو غوارماني في مدينة ليغهورن (الإيطالية) يوم 11 ديسمبر / كانون الأول من عام 1828م. كان والده من مواليد بولونيا (شمال إيطاليا) وكانت والدته - أرجنتينا فيغنوزي - من ليغهورن.
عمل أبوه في البداية وكيل تأمين وشحن بنجاح كبير وبعد ذلك تاجر حرير، لكن عندما فشل في أعماله وفقد كل ثروته قرر أن يهاجر إلى بيروت مع عائلته.
رحب كارلو - الذي كان وقتئذ شاباً لم يبلغ العشرين مع العمر - بقرار والده لأنه أبدى ميلاً للسفر منذ شبابه، وفي عام 1850م أبحر مع والده وأخويه وأخواته الثلاث إلى سورية بعد أن كانت والدته قد توفيت قبل عدة سنوات.
في بيروت كرس كارلو نفسه في البدء للتجارة، لكنه لم يجد نفسه مناسباً لقضاء معظم وقته في مهنة كثيرة الجلوس، سرعان ما أصبح عامل خدمة البريد الفرنسية الإمبراطورية في القدس لكنه وسّع نشاطاته التجارية بتأسيس علاقات مع القبائل البدوية في مناطق الحدود.
وبالرغم من أنه احتفظ بمنصبه الرسمي مدة اثنتي عشرة سنة، من المؤكد أيضاً أنه كان لديه وقت فراغ كبيراً تحت تصرفه، فقد كان قادراً على زيارة مصر والعودة إلى إيطاليا في عدة مناسبات، كان أيضاً حراً في الإنصراف لهوايته الخاصة وهي دراسة وحيازة أفضل أنواع الخيول العربية، وأخذه هذا دون شك إلى سبخات صحراء سورية وفلسطين، لكن من الصعب معرفة إلى أي مدى ذهب في هذا الشأن.
وبالتأكيد أصبح على معرفة بقبائل البدو الكبيرة التي كانت ترعى هناك بين الأراضي المأهولة من سورية وشمال ونجد، وحصل على معرفة بالقبائل وفروع القبائل ما أفاده كثيراً في وقت لاحق، يقول إنه وصل الجوف في إحدى المرات، وكما قيل إن ذلك كان في عام 1851م، بعد سنة من وصوله إلى سورية، لكن يبدو أن ذلك مشكوك فيه، وكانت حصيلة هذه الرحلات المبكرة نشر كتابه عن "الحصان العربي الأصيل".
إن هدوء وصف غوارماني ومعرفته الوثيقة الواضحة بكل ما هو عربي، تلهمان القارئ بالثقة الكبرى به وتدعمان أدلته ضد أدلة الآخرين، ولأنه قام بدراسة البدو العرب مدة طويلة، فإنه يُبدي معرفة بالقبائل البدوية وفروعها على مستوى معرفة دوتي (Doughty) نفسه.
