جمع في هذا الكتاب ديواني الحارث بن حلزة وعمرو بن كلثوم، ولكلا الشاعرين مكانته الشعرية الهامة في قومه وفي زمانه. والحارث بن حلزة من قبيلة بكر وقيل أنه ناظر عمرو بن كلثوم. وكان لشعره شهرة، خصوصاً معلقته التي تعتبر من أجود القصائد العربية والتي تدل على حكمة عميقة لصاحبها، وخبرة طويلة في المحافل الهامة والدفاع عن القبيلة، وردّ هجوم الأعداء عليها.
ولهذه المعلقة قيمة تاريخية وأخرى أدبية، أما التاريخية فتكمن فيما تفيدها عن المعارك بين تغلب وكندة، وتغلب والعباد... وأما قيمتها الأدبية فتكمن فيما فيها من دقة الوصف، وحسن السبك وتنوع طرق التعبير، وبلاغة الإيجاز، وجودة التقسيم، وجودة المنطق، وحسن الإشارة، إذ كان الشاعر فيها خطيباً مُجيداً، ومحامياً بارعاً، ودبلوماسياً متمكناً.
هذا بالنسبة إلى معلقته، وهذا ما يمكن أن يقال عن قصائده أيضاً. وقد جمع المحقق في هذا الكتاب إلى جانب ديوان الشاعر الكثير من قصائده، وقد جاء ذلك ضمن أقسام ثلاثة حيث استهلّ المحقق الديوان بترجمة للشاعر في القسم الأول ليعرض ديوان الشاعر في القسم الثاني وليقدم في القسم الثالث ما نسب للشاعر ولغيره مع ملحق ضمّ ترجمة الحارث بن حلزة من كتاب الأغاني.
وأما الجزء الثاني من هذا الكتاب فقد خصصه المحقق لديوان عمرو بن كلثوم، وعمرو بن كلثوم هو ابن مالك بن عتّاب التغلبي من أهل الجزيرة. وجدّه هو المهلهل الشاعر الجاهلي المشهور، والشاعر فخور مثل جدّه، متكبّر مثله، كذوب مثله، وفي شعره سهولة وتكرار وهلهلة كما في شعر جده.
ويقول المحقق بأنه لم يصل من شعر عمرو بن كلثوم شيء يستحق الذكر غير المعلقة، وأما ما بقي فأبيات ومقتطفات قليلة. منها الافتخار بنفسه وقومه، ومنها في مدح يزيد بن عمرو، ومنها في هجاء عمرو بن هند والنعمان أبي قابوس، وقد أورد المحقق بعضها في هذا الكتاب وقد جاء هذا الجزء ضمن قسمين ضمّ ترجمة للشاعر ثم ديوانه الذي حوى معلقته، ثم ألحق المحقق ذلك بدراسة حول صلة الديوان أو ما نسب إليه مع أشعار نسبت إليه وليست له مختتماً الكتاب بترجمة عمرو بن كلثوم من كتاب "الأغاني".
