تقوم شهرة "ابن زيدون" على أساس كونه وزيراً وعاشقاً وفارساً، وعالماً، لكن شهرته التي لا يعادلها شهرة، وهي تلك المتمثّلة بكونه شاعراً من كبار شعراء الأندلس، ترك ديواناً شعرياً عالج فيه مختلف الموضوعات والأغراض، وفي طليعتها الغزل، ووصف الطبيعة، والشكوى، والحنين، والعتاب، والمدح، والرثاء.
وقد جمع في حياته، وعكف الدارسون بعد موته على دراسته، ومن الذين انكبوا على دراسة ديوانه وشرحه كل من هيرت Hirt الذي عني بنشر منتخبات من ذلك الديوان، وأوغست كور A. Court الذي خصص دراسة مستقلة للشاعر من خلال ديوانه، وقام بنشر عدد من قصائده في قسطنطينة وباريس سنة 1920م؛ ومن الذين عنوا بدراسة ديوان "ابن زيدون" وقاموا بشرحه "كرم البستاني".
وقد اعتمد المحقق في هذا الديوان، على ما قام به "البستاني"، وقد توكّأ "ابن زيدون" معاني الأقدمين من الشعراء المشارقة، وانتحى نحوهم في العديد من قصائده لجهة إستهلالها بالغزل، أو لجهة الإغراب في بعض المعاني والألفاظ، إلاّ أنه، وكما سيتضح لك من خلال شعره الذي يتضمنّه هذا الديوان، كان شاعراً متفنناً مبدعاً... أبدع في وصفه وغزله وشكواه وحنينه، مثلما أبدع في المدح والعتاب والرثاء؛ وتفنّن في أسلوبه مثلما تفنّن في معانيه، فكان شعره على وجه الإجمال شعر العاطفة والخيال والوجدان، امتاز بالرقة والسلاسة وبالجزالة معاً... وأياً يكن، فناك شعر "ابن زيدون" الذي توفّر المحقق على شرح بعض غريبه وألفاظه، وأبان بعض مدلولاته، فلم يسرف كل السّرف، وما ذلك إلاّ لأن شعر الرجل هو من العذوبة والوضوح على جانب كبير ما يغني عن كل تبيان وتوضيح.
