هذا كتاب "شرح معاني الآثار" للإمام أبي جعفر الطحاوي، أحد مصادر الحديث النبوي الشريف المعتبرة، والذي عده الحافظ ابن حجر العسقلاني في كتابه: "إتحاف المهرة بأطراف العشرة". أحد الكتب الحديثة العشرة، التي تلي الكتب الستة، من حيث كونها مظنة الحديث الصحيح، فضلاً عن كونه جمع بين دفتيه فقه الحديث، وعلاوة أيضاً على اشتماله على فوائد حديثية، وأقوال في الجرح والتعديل تساعد على قبول الأخبار وردّها، فكان هذا الكتاب جديراً بالدراسة، والعناية والاقتناء.
ظهرت الطبعة الأولى لهذا الكتاب في لكنو بالعهد عام 1300هـ/1882م، وتضافرت على تصحيحه جهود علماء الهند وأجلةِ مشايخها؛ لكن هذه الطبعة حفلتْ بالأخطاء العلمية والمطبعية الكثيرة، من تصحيف وتحريف، وزيادة ونقص. ثم أعيد طبع الكتاب بمطبعة الأنوار المحمدية عام 1388هـ وقام بتصحيحها محمد زهري النجار ومحمد سيّد جاد الحق، وهما من علماء الأزهر، ولكن هذه الطبعة لم تكن أفضل من سابقتها. لذلك تولى "يوسف عبد الرحمن المرعشلي" عملية تحقيق الكتاب ومن جديد من هذه الطبعة الجديدة معتمداً على الطبعة المصرية؛ أما عمله فتجلى بـ: أولاً تصحيح أسماء الرجال، ثانياً: أشار إلى السقط الواقع في الطبعات القديمة، أضاف تعليقات جديدة فيها ذكر مصادر التصحيح، ثالثاً: أضاف لمسات فنية للكتاب تزيده رونقاً وبهاءاً، فرقم أحاديثه، وأبوابه بأرقام متسلسلة، ووضع فهارس علمية للكتاب تساعد الباحث فيه بالحصول على مسألته منه بسهولة ويسر، فوضع فهرساً للآيات القرآنية، وللأحاديث وللآثار وآخر لمسانيد الصحابة ولمرويات مشايخ الإمام الطحاوي على حروف المعجم، وأيضاً فهرساً للمسائل الفقهية التي وردت في هذا الكتاب.
