يعدّ كتاب الألوسي من كتب التفسير الهامة ومنهجه في ذلك البحث عن كيفية النطق بألفاظ القرآن الكريم ومدلولاتها وأحكامها الإفرادية والتركيبية ومعانيها التي تحمل عليها حالة التركيب وتتمات لذلك كمعرفة النسخ وسبب النزول وقصة توضح ما أبهم في القرآن ونحو ذلك. وكان الإمام الألوسي يلجأ في بعض الأحيان إلى التأويل دون قطع ويقول في هذا بأن في التأويل إشارة قدسية ومعارف سبحانية تنكشف من سجف العبارات للسالكين وتنهل من سحب الغيب على قلوب العارفين. لذا فقد كان يأخذ أيضاً بالتفسير بالرأي مستعيناً في كثير من الأحيان بما جاء عن أهل العرفان في المتصوفة في ما ذهبوا إليه في تأويل ما ورد من آيات القرآن الكريم.
