صنف الإمام "الطحاوي الحنفي" كتابه هذا في الآثار المأثورة عن رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم في الأحكام التي يتوهم أهل الإلحاد والضعفة من أهل الإسلام أن بعضها ينقض بعضاً لقلة علمهم بناسخها من منسوخها وما يجب به العمل منها لما يشهد له من الكتاب الناطق والسنة المجتمع عليها، وجعل لذلك أبواباً ذكر في كل كتاب منها ماضيه من الناسخ والمنسوخ، وتأويل العلماء واحتجاج بعضهم على بعض وإقامة الحجة لمن صح عنده قوله منهم بما يصح به مثله من كتاب أو سنة أو إجماع أو تواتر من أقاويل الصحابة أو تابعيهم.
وقد جاء الكتاب محققاً، إذ تجلى ذلك في تخريج الأحاديث النبوية والآثار على كتب الحديث التسعة، صحيح البخاري، صحيح مسلم، سنن أبى داود، سنن الترمذي، سنن النسائي، سنن ابن ماجة، موطأ الإمام مالك، مسند الدارمي، مسند الإمام أحمد بن حنبل، بالإضافة إلى عدد من كتب الحديث المعتمدة. كما عُنيَ المحقق بشرح ما في متن الكتاب من غريب اللغة، وتخريج بعض الشواهد الشعرية، والآيات القرآنية، وألحق الكتاب بفهرس تفصيلي للأحاديث النبوية القولية والفعلية والآثار عن الصحابة والتابعين.
قال الطحاوي: " سألني بعض أصحابنا من أهل العلم أن أضع له كتاباً أذكر فيه الآثار المأثورةعن رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم في الأحكام التي يتوهم أهل الإلحاد والضعفة من أهل الإسلام أن بعضها ينقض بعضها ينقض بعضاً لقلة علمهم بناسخها من منسوخها وما يجب به العمل منها ... وتأويل العلماء واحتجاج بعضهم على بعض، وإقامة الحجة لمن صح عندي قوله ... " وهذا الكتاب في أحاديث الأحكام مرتباً على الأبواب الفقهية وفيه جمع بين مختلف الحديث بما ينمي عند طالب العلم الملكة الفقهية
