لما توفي رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم قام بالأمر بعده الإمام أبو بكر الصديق رضي الله عنه، وكان قد بويع له بالخلافة في اليوم الذي مات فيه النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم بسقيفة بني ساعدة، ولذلك قصة عجيبة يذكرها العلامة أبي محمد أحمد بن أعثم الكوفي بتمامها، في هذا الكتاب يذكر ما فتحه المسلمون في أيامه وأيام أمير المؤمنين عمر بن الخطاب رضي الله عنهما من الفتوحات، وقتال أهل (الردة)، وذلك أن المسلمين اجتمعوا وبكوا على فقد رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم، فقال لهم أبو بكر: إن دمتم على هذه الحال فهو والله الهلاك والبوار.
