إنّي لمّا رأيتُ النّاس تنظر إلى الصّوم على أنّه عبادة فرديّة، إنعزاليّة، لا شأن لها بالواقع، ولا بصميم الحياة، ولا بالسّياسة والاجتماع، ووحدة الكلمة ولمّ الشّمل، وتنظر إليه على أنّه عبادة تساوق الكسل عن طلب الرزق والقعود عن طلب العلم، وتراه ينسجم مع القعود عن الجهاد في سبيل اللّه، وقطيعة الرّحم، وقطع يد المعونة عن اليتيم والفقير والمسكين، إنّي لمّا رأيت كلّ ذلك في النّاس وجدت أنّه لزاماً عليّ والحال هذا أن أبيّن للنّاس حقيقة الأمر، وواقعَ الصّيام، وأن أجلوَ أذهانهم بما مكّنني فيه ربّي عن أفكارٍ سعى عدوُّنا الظّلوم على تلقينها لنا قروناً وأعواماً متطاولة، فعلتُ ذلك غيرَمتّكل ٍ البتّة على حيلتي وقوتّي، بل على الحيّ القيّوم الّذي لا يصيبه سأم ولا ملل
