تعرض الدراسة الإشكالية التراث في الخطاب العربي الإسلامي المعاصر، من منظور تقييم الجهود المنهجية التي قدمت مقاربات تزعم من خلالها تجاوز التأخر التاريخي للعالم الإسلامي، وترصد أهم الإشكالات المنهجية التي تقف حائلاً دون تجديد التراث بشكل يجعله ضمن سياقات تطور المناهج والعلوم الإنسانية والإجتماعية، كما تستعرض الدارسة علاقة التراث بالدين؛ من أجل إبراز أبعاد العلاقة بين القراءات التي تجعل من التراث ديناً او من الدين تراثاً، وكيف يسهم ذلك في الكُمُون الحضاري الذي تعيشه الأمة، من خلال إستحضار جانب من الدراسات التي قدمها عدد من المفكرين والباحثين في الخطاب العربي المعاصر، الذين وإن اختلفنا معهم في إجاباتهم عن معضلة المنهج وما يرتبط بها من معضلات أخرى، فقد نستفيد من حقيقة وواقعية الأسئلة التي يطرحونها، وهو ما يفسح المجال للوقوف عند عدد من الدراسات الفكرية المهتمة عموماً بالتجديد الثقافي؛ التي أسهم فيها المفكرون، حداثيين كانوا أم إسلاميين، علمانيين أم يساريين، حيث ألفت كتب ودراسات متنوعة تدعي عمية التجديد والتنوير الثقافي عبر منهجيات جديدة في قراءة التراث.
