جرت محاولات عربية كثيرة لدراسة التاريخ الإسلامي وقراءة حوادثه من خلال مناهج حديثة للبحث، ومن أبزر المحاولات المعاصرة تلك التي قام بها علي الوردي الذي حاول تطبيق العلوم الإجتماعية الحديثة على العراق وتاريخه وشخصيته مستخدماً أحياناً منهج ابن خلدون في مقدمته المعروفة، ومحاولة أحمد صالح العلي وخصوصاً كتابه "التنظيمات الإدارية والإجتماعية في البصرة في القرن الهجري الأول" الصادر في بغداد 1953، إلى ذلك هناك قراءات هادي العلوي ومحاولات أحمد أمين في "ضحى الإسلام" و"فجر الإسلام" وجواد علي عن "موارد تاريخ الطبري" إلى عشرات الأبحاث والدراسات والمقالات التي تناولت فكرة التاريخ عند المسلمين وتطور معرفتهم به وإكتشاف مداخله الفلسفية والسياسية أشهرها كتابات عبد الله العروي ومحمد عابد الجابري وهشام جعيط وإبراهيم القادري بوتشيش ورضوان السيد.
تحاول هذه الدراسة في فصلها الأول تأكيد أهمية المكان والزمان وتأثيرهما على تطور المفهوم التاريخي عند المؤرخين المسلمين والعناصر المشتركة التي ساهمت في تأسيس ذاك الوعي، ودور الدين كحافز عقلاني لإكتشاف تاريخ الزمن إلى قيادة الدولة للتحولات الإجتماعية وعلاقة فكرة التاريخ بفكرة الزمن وإتصالها بالفقه والحديث والسيرة واللغة.
بعد تحاول الدراسة قراءة تطور مفهوم التاريخ من خلال كتابات إدوارد كار عن علم التاريخ وفرانز روزنتال عن علم التاريخ عند المسلمين، وصولاً إلى التقاط تصور مشترك لمفهوم الكتابة التاريخية عند المؤرخين المسلمين.
