تطمح هذه الدراسة إلى إثارة إشكالية النقد العربي الحديث في بعدها التراثي، في العلاقة التي أقامها هذا النقد مع التراث النقدي، ويمكن إختزال الأسئلة التي عملت على طرحها في سؤالين مركزيين:
أ-ما هو المنهج (أو المناهج) التي تم بها إستيعاب التراث النقدي من لدن النقد العربي الحديث، وما هي الأنساق المعرفية والمفاهيم الكبرى التي وجهت تلك المناهج؟.
ب-ما هي الخلفيات التي تحكمت في نظرة النقد العربي الحديث إلى التراث النقدي، وما هي الأهداف التي رسمها، وهو يدرس هذا التراث؟...
لعل صيغة "القراءات العربية للتراث النقدي" تختصر إلى حد بعيد، الإمتدادات الإشكالية التي يفصح عنها السؤالان السابقان، ذلك أن مفهوم القراءة يوحي بأننا أمام نص يسمح بتعدد الرؤى، وبإختلاف زوايا النظر، وهذا ما ينطبق على التراث النقدي من زاويتين، عامة وخاصة:
من الزاوية العامة: إن "النقد العربي القديم" لا تجوز مقاربته من منظور هذه الدراسة، إلا في إطار الإشكالية العامة للتراث العربي، الذي يتميز، كما هو معلوم، بالإضافة إلى بعده المعرفي، بحمولة وجدانية، جعلت منه مكوناً من مكونات الهوية العربية، وبشحنة إيديولوجية، جعلت منه مكوناً من مكونات "الواقع" ومن هنا كانت إشكالية التراث إشكالية قرائية بالدرجة الأولى.
ومن الزاوية الخاصة: إن خصوصية النقد الأدبي، بإعتباره نشاطاً معرفياً ونمطاً من الإبداع، تجعل منه خطاباً متميزاً، يتمتع بإستقلال نسبي عن باقي مجالات المعرفة الأخرى، مما يؤدي إلى أن التراث النقدي في تفاعله مع اللحظة الثقافية واللحظة الأدبية، هو نمط من التراث خاص ومتميز، رغم أنه يندرج ضمن التراث العربي، ويشكل جزءاً غير منفصل عنه.
إن النظر إلى "النقد العربي القديم" من منطلق كونه رافداً من روافد التراث العربي، يفترض أن هناك ربطاً جدلياً بين "النقد العربي القديم" والنقد العربي الحديث، وهو ما وجه القراءات العربية المعاصرة للتراث النقدي وجهة معينة، يطمح الكتاب، من بين ما يطمح إليه، إلى الكشف عن جوانبها التي تتسم بالتعقيد.
