"بداية المحدث" كتاب يأتي ضمن سلسلة مدارج العلماء، وهو يمتاز عن أقرانه من هذا العلم بما يلي: أولاً: يعد الكتاب متناً معتمداً في فنه عند المختصين. ثانياً: يعتبر الكتاب أولى عتبات العلم في فنه. ثالثاً: الامتزاج بين القديم بأصالته والجديد بمعاصرته، وقد بذل في سبيل هذا التمازج التالي: أ-تم تخصيص معلومات كل باب على طريقة التشجير، ليسهل تصورها قبل الولوج في الباب. ب-رتب النص الأصلي -بعد أن كان مرصوصاً -ورقم مع تغيير ما يلزم، ووضع له عناوين جانبية حين يتطلب الأمر. ج-قدم لكل قاعدة بمثال يوضحها وأغلب الأمثلة من الأحاديث الصحيحة. د-ختم كل باب بأبيات تنظم ما ورد في الباب من معلومات، ليسهل للراغب حفظها. هـ-في حالة غموض بعض العبارات تم الاستعانة بشرح المؤلف نفسه وأضيف إلى المتن.
هذا، وإن النص المختار هو متن "نخبة الفكر في مصطلحات أهل الأثر" لابن حجر العسقلاني، والنظم المنتقى هو "قصب السكر" للإمام الصنعاني.
