لقد جلبت إنتباهي، في كتاب الحيوان للجاحظ، قصيدة في واحد وأربعين بيتاً للحكم بن عمرو البهرانيّ، فرحت أبحث عن هذا الشاعر وأنقّب عن قصيدته في بطون الكتب، وإنّه ليؤسفني أن أقول هنا إنّني عدت من ذلك البحث والتنقيب بخفّي حنين.
ومع ذلك فقد آثرت أن أنتزع هذه القصيدة من كتاب الحيوان، وأن أنشرها منفصلة لأهمّيتها البالغة في معرفة آراء العرب في الجاهليّة، وفي معرفة شيء عن دينهم ومعتقداتهم وأساطيرهم الشعبيّة، وآثرت أيضاً أن أشرحها شرحاً وافياً، وأن أفهرسها لكي يسهل الرجوع إليها والإستئناس بها.
ومن كلام الجاحظ نفهم أيضاً أنّ الحكم كان شاعراً يهتمّ بإعتقادات العرب وبآرائهم في الغريب من الأشياء، ومن جملة أشعاره هذه القصيدة الرائيّة الّتي ذكر فيها ضروباً من المخلوقات اللاإنسيّة الّتي كانت الأعراب تؤمن بها إيماناً مطلقاً، والّتي قال عنها الجاحظ إنّها "كلّها باطل".
