يمثل هذا الكتاب موشوراً تاويلياً مفتوحاً على جملة من القراءات الجادة لثقافة الآخر، وهو بذلك يتجاوز شيطنة (Demonization) الآخر، مقترحاً سبراً نقدياً لشعريات المثاقفة، ممثلة بنماذج من الشعر والرواية، تختبر نوعن من الحركة، كل منهما يتجه في إتجاه معاكس للآخر، حركة تحيلنا إلى ما يدعوه هومي بابا، بــ "الفضاء الثالث".
لماذا صار هذا الفضاء المشحون بالصور النمطية فضاء ثالثاً؟ لأن الفضاء الأول يتشبث بأسطورة الأصالة والعودة إلى الأصل، أي الإمتثال لمفهوم المركز الأوروبي، وأما الثاني فهو الفضاء الضدي، فضاء الأصالة المعاكسة الذي يتشبث به دعاة النزعة النقائية التي ترفض بإصرار إنفتاح آداب الهامش على المركز الأوروبي.
ويبقى أخيراً فضاء العلاقة المفتوحة على الآخر الأوروبي، الفضاء الثالث الذي يرفض كلاً من مفهوم التموقع الحضاري حاضن فكرة الثبات الذي جعلته الأصولية الإستشراقية علماً مرفوعاً على الآخر الشرقي، ومفهوم الأصولية النقائية التي تتنكر لأي مفهوم يتصل بفكرة إنفتاح الثقافات واحدها على الآخر، وهو فضاء اسمه المثاقفة، فضاء متوتر يتعايش فيه الضدان تعايش الحب والكراهية (Ambivalence)، ويختزله جاك بيرك بقوله: "إن العرب يريدون ألا يشابهوا الآخرين وألا يختلفوا عنهم أيضاً".
لكل هل يمكن أن يتعايش المُختَلف والمؤتَلف في سِمطِ واحد؟ هل يمكن أن لا يكون العقل الغربي الأدائي مكرَّساً لخدمة نفسه؟...
هذا الكتاب يقترح السبيل إلى الجواب، أو الأجوبة عن السؤال.
