الظواهر الدينية لها جذرها الكتابي والنصي، ولكنها لا تنكشف إلا في أجواء إجتماعية وثقافية، وعندما يتجلى الدين في تلك المكونات يصبح من المهم دراسة الوعاء الحاضن للظاهره التي يوجه مسارها ويجسد تجليها سواء كانت فعلًا أو رد فعل... ومصر منذ أكثر من أربعين عامًا واجهت موجات من التدين ، يبدأ بموجة روحية شديدة الانفعال ثم تستقر في تدين واقعي حركي منظم قائم علي الحشد، ثم يدخل في مرحلة ترشيدية تقنن فيها الخبرة وهذا الكتاب دراسة عن الحالة الدينية لمصر وإطار حركتها مع محيطيها، وهو يحاول أن يكون جادًا في الاكتشاف والحوار حول الاتجاهات الفكرية والدينية داخل الجماعة الدينية المصرية المسيحية والإسلامية على مستواها الديني والمدني بغية الوصول إلى إطار ونموذج تفسيري يجعل من المسألة الدينية أمرًا مفهومًا ومنطقيًا وليس أسطورة يحيط بها الغموض، ويضع ظاهيريتها رهنًا للعوامل المحيطة السياسية والدينية كما تحاول هذه الدراسة أن تفهم خيارات المؤسسة الدينية المسيحية وساحات تحركها داخل المجال العام، ونمط العلاقة الفاصل حاليًا بينها وبين الحكم والجماعات السياسية والدينية الإسلامية كما يقترب تحليلًا وتفسيرًا من نماذج لشخصيات دينية مؤثرة في المزاج العام ، أي أن هذه الدراسة تحاول مراقبة صنع اتجاهات الخطاب الديني في إطار الخطاب الوطني العام. والكتاب ينحاز في منهجة لمفهوم الجماعة الوطنية بوصفة المعبر الحقيقي عن حالة التعايش المصرية والمدخل المناسب للتعامل مع مكوناتها وأوزانها وبالتالي التعامل مع المكون المسيحي بمؤسساته يجب أن يتم التعامل معه باعتباره شأنًا وطنيًا وكذالك المكون الإسلامي مؤسساته وتياراته الحركية هي شؤون وطنية ليس هناك طارئًا أو ضيفًا داخل مكونات الجماعة الوطنية المصرية.
