وكان قد عمل بالتدريس والبحث في جامعة نواكشوط بموريتانيا، في الفترة من 1985-1993، وتولى رئاسة قسم التاريخ بكلية الآداب والعلوم الإنسانية خلال الفترة (1986-1993)، وأسس بها مخبر البحوث والدراسات التاريخية (1991-1993).
ألف عداً من الكتب والدراسات باللغة العربية، منها: "الإمارات والنظام الأميري الموريتاني" (أبوظبي، 2007)؛ و"عوائق الإبداع في الثقافة العربية بين الموروث الآسر وتحديات العولمة"، سلسلة دراسات استراتيجية (أبوظبي: مركز الإمارات للدراسات والبحوث الاستراتيجية، 2006)؛ "العلاقات التجارية والسياسية بين إمارة الترارزة والفرنسيين من 1659 إلى 1860" (الرباط: معهد الدراسات الأفريقية، 2002)؛ "الفتاوى والتاريخ" (بيروت: دار الغرب الإسلامي، 2000)؛ "تاريخ موريتانيا: فصول ومراجعات" (نواكشوط: مخبر البحوث والدراسات التاريخية، 1999، مؤلف مشترك)؛ "تاريخ القضاء في موريتانيا من عهد المرابطين إلى الاستقلال" (تونس: المدرسة الوطنية للإدارة، 1997، مؤلف مشترك)؛ "حرب شرببه أو أزمة القرن السابع عشر في الجنوب الغربي الموريتاني" (نواكشوط: المعهد الموريتاني للبحث العلمي، 1994)؛ و"البنى القبلية بين الثبات والتغير من خلال مسألة العاقلة" (قيد النشر، مؤلف مشترك).
كما ألف عدداً من الكتب والدراسات باللغة الفرنسية منها: Le Fleuve Sénégal comme enjeu régional: de la "Colonisation agricole" à l'Après-Barrage" (1818-2001), in: Les trajectoires d'un Etat-frontière (90-112), Dakar, Codesria 2004(collectif); "La A'qila dans la jurisprudence maure: Communauté d'intérêt et référential identitaire, (IEA, Rabat, 2001).
وترجم وأعد للنشر عدداً من النصوص كان آخرها مذكرات الرئيس الموريتاني الأسبق المختار ولد داداه: "موريتانيا رهان التحديات الكبرى".
حصل محمد المختار ولد السعد على درجة الدكتوراه في التاريخ من جامعة التاسع من أبريل في تونس العاصمة عام 2000.
