أصبح من المتفق عليه إلى حد كبير الآن بين المفكرين ومثقفي العصر أن الفروق بين الدول المتقدمة والدول المتخلفة هي فروق في امتلاك الدول للعقول المبدعة أو عدم امتلاكها لها؛ فقد أصبح الإبداع هو المحك الحاسم في الإسراع بتقدم شعب من الشعوب أو تخلفه ووقوفه عند حاوية التخلف والجهل. ويحظى موضوع الإبداع باهتمام واسع في الوقت الحاضر؛ لا سيما أن المجتمعات تسير في خطى حثيثة من أجل تقدمها وعبر هذه المسيرة لابد من وجود مشكلات اجتماعية واقتصادية وعلمية...إلخ، ونحتاج إلى الإبداع والابتكار في كل مجالات النشاط الإنساني حيث يساعد فهم تأثير الثقافة في الإبداع في إلقاء الضوء على المشكلات المعوقة للإبداع، وتقييم وتطوير الممارسات التربوية التي تنمي القدرة الإبداعية.
ينطلق هذا الكتاب من تساؤل محوري مؤداه: ما العلاقة بين الثقافة والإبداع؟ وقد حدد الباحث حزمة من الأهداف تتسق مع هذا التساؤل على النحو التالي: التعرف على ملامح صورة المبدع عن ذاته الإبداعية. والوقوف على الدور الذي تلعبه مؤسسات الغرس الثقافي الرسمية (النظام التعليمي)، وغير الرسمية (الأسرة) في تنمية الإبداع وتطوره لدى المبدعين. وإبراز دور الثقافة السائدة في المجتمع، وهل هي محفزة للإبداع أو معيقة له؟ وأخيرا التعرف على أبرز معوقات القدرة الإبداعية في المجتمع، كما يراها المبدعون داخل مؤسسات إنتاج المعرفة.
