إن دراسة تاريخ العلاقات الفنية بين روسيا والوطن العربي تمتلك أهمية سياسية وثقافية كبيرة.
فالترتيب الزمني لبحث هذا الموضوع وهو بداية القرن التاسع عشر لم يكن بالصدفة. إنما يفسر ذلك بأنه وقبل هذا التاريخ لم يكن هنالك فنانون روس قاموا بزيارة للوطن العربي وعبورا عنه بلوحاتهم وبشكل مباشر من خلال رؤيتهم له.
لذلك كان لابد لنا في البداية من التطرق إلى موضوع إعطاء لمحة تاريخية لهذه العلاقة التاريخية التي ربطت بين دول أوروبا الغربية من جهة وبين الوطن العربي من جهة أخرى والتي قادتنا بدورها إلى إجراء بعضا لمقارنات لنفس الحالة بين روسيا القيصرية من طرف والوطن العربي من طرف آخر.
كما هو معروف لنا جميعاً فإن بداية العلاقة التي تربط بين دول أوروبا الغربية والوطن العربي تعود في تاريخها إلى قرون بعيدة، وقد أخذنا بعين الاعتبار الطابع الاستعماري الواضح الذي كانت تحمله تلك العلاقة من قبل الدول، فلم لا وهذه البلاد العربية الغنية تمتلك ثروة ثقافية قديمة جداً لا تقدر بثمن، حيث فيها مهد الحضارات القديمة وكذلك على أرضها كانت ولادة الديانات السماوية الثلاث: اليهودية ـ المسيحية ـ الإسلام، هذا بالإضافة إلى كونها تحتل مكاناً استراتيجياً هاماً في الخارطة الجغرافية لهذا العالم، مما جعلها ومنذ القديم هدفاً للسياسات الاستعمارية لكل من فرنسا ـ بريطانيا ـ إيطاليا وغيرها من الحكومات والدول الأوروبية الغربية.
