ما زالت روسيا - على رغم الأزمات التي تعتصرها - إحدى الدول الفاعلة في النظام الدولي الراهن ذات المقعد الدائم في مجلس الأمن، فهي الدولة الوريثة للإتحاد السوفياتي، والقوة العظمى الثانية على المستوى العسكري إذ إن لديها أكبر قوة تقليدية في أوروبا وآسيا، فضلاً عن كونها أكبر دول العالم من حيث المساحة.
