كان للدور الذي لعبته المجموعات الهائلة من المخطوطات العربية المحفوظة في المكتبات الروسية أثر بالغ الأهمية على مسيرة المدرسة الاستشراقية الروسية. وعلى الرغم من ذلك فإن تاريخ الاستشراق الروسي في مجال دراسة الدين الإسلامي يبقى، رغم وجود عدد من الدراسات المتفرقة في بعض المجالات، غير معروف. لذا كان من الضروري إبراز هذا الدور، خاصة وأن دراسة المخطوطات العربية الإسلامية شكلت نقطة انطلاق الاستشراق العلمي العالمي.
من هذا المنطلق جاء اهتمام المؤلف بهذا الموضوع فكان كتابه هذا الذي يعطي صورة شاملة للعلاقات التي كانت تربط الروسيين القدامى بجيرانهم المسلمين، وكذلك لمختلف المراحل التي قطعها الاستشراق الروسي حتى يتكون لدى القارئ العربي تصور عام للموضوع. وغاية المؤلف إعطاء نظرة تاريخية لمسيرة المدرسة الاستعرابية الروسية منذ نشأتها إلى حدود منتصف القرن العشرين، فيكون بذلك قد مهد الطريق للبحث المستقبلي في هذا المجال المتمثل أساساً في دراسة مميزات الاستعراب الروسي من خلال أعلامه ومؤلفاتهم.
كلما دار الحديث عن الاستشراق، يتبادر إلى الذهن الدراسات الاستشراقية التي أُنجزت في أوروبا الغربية. وغالباً ما يغيب عن بال الدارسين ما أُنجز في أوروبا الشرقية رغم ما لها من تاريخ طويل وتقاليد راسخة في هذا الميدان، وعلى الأخص في بلدان: روسيا وأوكرانيا وبولونيا والمجر وما كان يسمى بيوغسلافيا وتشيكوسلوفاكيا.. والمدارس الاستشراقية في هذه البلدان، أنجبت مجموعة من العلماء كانت لهم إسهامات في هذا المجال لا تقل أهمية عن إسهامات زملائهم الغربيين، مع أن ما كُتب باللغة العربيّة حول الاستشراق الروسي مثلاً، لا يتعدى صفحات في بضعة مؤلفات، أو مقالات متفرّقة في بعض المجلاّت.
وسنحاول في هذه الدراسة معالجة بعض القضايا المرتبطة بتاريخ الاستشراق الروسي حول الدين الإسلامي واللغة والأدب العربيين وحضارة العرب وتاريخهم. كما سنسعى إلى إبراز خصوصيات الاستعراب الروسي ومميزاته والتعريف بألمع أعلامه منذ بداياته حتى منتصف القرن العشرين.
