"مرر أنامله فوق نقش غير متقن، حفر على أحد أضلاع هيكل السفينة كان يراه ويتحسسه دائماً حينما يضجع في المكان ذاته، من يا ترى نقشه؟ وأين مضى؟ ولماذا ينقش الناس أفكارهم على أخشاب قيعان السفن والأشجار وحيطان السجون والمراحيض؟ تساءل مع نفسه كما كان يتساءل كل مرة وهو منزو وحيداً في الظلام، كان رسماً لحيوان أشبه بفيل ملوياً بين نابين مقوسين إلى أعلى، ينظر لعبد الله نظرة تغلفت الأسرار والمخاوف. كان يتأهب للركض أو للهرب غير آبه بالرجل القابع فوقه: رجل بعمامة وجبة وحزام، وقد عقص شعر لحيته ضفائر".
