يهدف هذا الكتاب، عن طريق البحث الميداني، والنقد الأكاديمي الرصين، إلى فهم ديناميكيات الاحتجاج في مصر (ثورة 25 كانون الثاني/ يناير)؛ وسدّ النقص المعرفي في أدبيات علم السياسة الذي يتعرّض لمنطقة الشرق الأوسط، الراجع إلى اقتناع راسخ بأولوية مطلقة للسياسة "من أعلى" ("السياسة الرسمية" والمؤسسات) على حساب أو حتى استبعاد "السياسة من أسفل" (السياسة والتفاعلات "غير الرسمية" وديناميكيات خارج المؤسسات). ومن خلال الفصول العشرة، بدا جلياً جهد الباحثين المشاركين في تأليف هذا الكتاب؛ الذين عرفوا كيف يقرنون البحث الميداني بالنظري، ويربطون التحليل بالنقد، مما أفضى إلى (1) استكشاف نهج السياسة الاجتماعية كعدسة مفاهيمية لدراسة الديناميكيات الإقليمية في الوقت الراهن؛ و (2) تكوين صورة شاملة، حيّة، من "أحداث الساعة" حتى انهيار النظام؛ و (3) تحليل التفاعل بين الدولة والكنيسة والأزهر والحركات الدينية لبيان كيف يتطور الخطاب الديني إلى حركات اجتماعية جديدة؛ و (4) اعتماد "ميدان التحرير" كصورة مصغرّة من مصر، مع التركيز على "ديناميكيات الجماعات" والتوسع في دراسة حركات الشباب، ومصير هذه الحركات حتى بعد سقوط النظام؛ و (5) دور المرأة، كجزء من الثورة، والتحديات التي تواجهها بعد الثورة؛ و (6) دراسة القوة المؤثرة للجيش قبل الثورة وأثناءها وبعدها؛ و (7) النظر إلى خارج تجربة "الميدان" في كلٍّ من الزمان والمكان، حيث يمكن النظر إلى الديناميكيات في مصر من خلال علاقاتها بالدول والخبرات الأخرى؛ و (8) نظرات نقدية لأدبيات الانتقال الديمقراطي وتحدياته؛ (9) ثمّ التساؤل الكبير: هل نشهد بالفعل ميلاد شرق أوسط جديد؟ وما هي التحديات التي تواجه إعادة هيكلة هذا الشرق الأوسط وقضية التحول إلى الديمقراطية، بوجه عام؟
