يعالج كتاب: الشرق الأوسط المتغيّر: نظرة جديدة إلى الديناميكيات العربية موضوع التغيير وآلياته في منطقة الشرق الأوسط، في محاولةٍ لفهم المنطقة من خلال إلقاء نظرة شاملة على السياسات والمجتمعات. وفي هذا الصدد، يرى المساهمون في بحوث الكتاب أن النظرة والتحليل السائدين فيما يتعلق بالشرق الأوسط يتجاهلان سُنّةَ الحركية، على اعتبار أن هذه المنطقة لا تتغيّر (؟!)، وفي هذا دليل واضح على انتهاج تفكير محافظ موروث في عملية التحليل الاجتماعي. بالمقابل يرى الباحثون أن أي تحليل لعناصر الثبات والاستمرارية، لكي يقدم لنا فهماً ملائماً لأوضاع المنطقة، يجب أن يتصل، لإجراء التوازن المطلوب، بتحديد وتحليل عناصر التغيير فيها. وهذه العناصر موجودة بالفعل، وهي تُسهم في تشكيل مصير الشرق الأوسط. وقد ميزت العملية المفهومية المستخدمة في هذا الكتاب، بين صنفين من التغيير: المباغت الذي يأتي من دون مقدمات، كما "الانفجار الكبير"، والهادئ الثابت الذي يكاد لا يلحظ وجوده، وإن كان يتطور تدريجياً في عملية تراكمية. إلا أن عملية التغيير المستمر ليست تراكمية فحسب، بل إنها قد تولّد بسهولة كثيراً من الأحداث الكبرى. ولهذين السببين يركز الكتاب على إظهار أثر التغيير الحثيث والبطيء. وبالتالي، فإن مؤشرات التغيير، سواء كانت كبيرة مباغتة، أو تراكمية بطيئة، تظهر أن الاستمرار/الركود الظاهر في الساحة السياسية العربية قد يكون محصوراً بقمة الهرم السياسي. ولكن على العكس من ذلك، فإن قاعدة "الهرم"، أو المجتمع المدني والمشهد الإقليمي، حبلى بالتغيير. هذه المفارقة بين القاعدة المجتمعية ورأس الهرم السياسي، لا يمكن أن تستمر إلى مالا نهاية، وانهيارها قد يكون حافزاً إلى المزيد من التغيير.
