تميزت الدراسات الأدبية التي تناولت الأدب والشعر في البحرين على قلتها بعدم تناولها للشعر البحريني تناولاً فنياً هادفاً ووفق منهج فني تقدمي متكامل. ومن هنا تأتي قيمة هذه الدراسة التي قدمها د.علوي الهاشمي والتي يتصدى فيها لدراسة تجربة الشعر المعاصر في البحرين، ومن خلال منهج جدلي متطور يلقي الضوء على طبيعة العلاقة القائمة بين الشعر والحياة وبين الشكل والمضمون. وليرصد من خلال هذه الدراسة تطور تجربة الشعر المعاصر في هذا البلد بما يتفاعل مع تطور المجتمع وتطلعات الإنسان الحقيقة في الحياة.
ورغم العقبات التي يحصرها المؤلف في العقبة المنهجية الناشئة عن الاختلاف الدقيق بين طبيعة العمل والنقدي وطبيعة العمل الفني الإبداعية والعقبات الأخرى التي اعترضته في النظر إلى طبيعة المادة المدروسة فيما تصل بشعراء البحرين فإنه قد تمكن من النفاذ إلى روح العلم الفني والكشف عن القيمة الفنية للوجود في القصيدة البحرينية الناضجة حيث بلغ آفاقاً شعرية مختلف أهمها ما أطلق عليه اسم الطبيعة المتخيلة لدى الشاعر إبراهيم العريض الذي رأى أنه يفهم أسرار الكون والوجود والطبيعة. أما في شعر أحمد محمد الخليفة، فإن يكتشف عوالم واسعة خبيئة من (الوهم الجميل) ومن الخيال المجنح الطليق.
