هذا الكتاب مشروع نقديّ تطبيقيّ غايته تأصيل الكتابة في (أدب الظلال) بوصفها ظاهرةً موغلةً في شعر العرب، ضاربةً بجذورها في الحوليّات والمنقّحات والقصائد اليتيمة والمقطوعات وما تناثر في ديوان العرب من شواهد منتقاة، وما ضاع من أبيات ومختارات لشعراء أنشأوا قصائد وافرة الحظّ من الجودة، بيد أنّهم قالوا ولم يُحفَظ قولهم.
وسبيل تأصيل هذا المشروع تناول النصوص بالنقد والتحليل لإستكشاف قيمتها الفنّيّة الجماليّة، وتحديد منازلها الإبداعيّة لإستصفاء جيّد الأدب وعطف الذائقة على جميل القيم، سبيلاً إلى تمييز (الضوء الزائف) من (الظلمة المضيئة).
والكتاب، إلى ذلك، مشروعٌ إنسانيّ غايته إظهار فضل ذوي الفضل، ومساعدة الشعراء - ولا سيّما من المبتدئين - على التفوّق والنجاح بذكر محاسنهم بدلاً من تقصّي عيوبهم ونقائصهم تقصّياً يحبط آمالهم ويعطل إبداعهم، من دون أن يعني هذا الإختيار الوقوع في المجاملة والتسامح الّذي يضيم الأدب والأدباء.
