وليم سارويان كاتب أرمني الأصل أميركي الجنسية هاجرت أسرته إلى الولايات المتحدة في مطلع هذا القرن، شأن الكثيرين من أبناء شعبه الذين تشردوا ي مختلف أنحاء العالم بعد المذابح التي تعرضوا لها في بداية هذا القرن.
ولد سارويان في بلدة فريزنو في ولايات كاليفورنيا الأميركية في عام 1908، وفيها قضى فترة الطفولة والمراهقة، ضمن ذلك الجو الذي يجاهد بكل إصرار وقوة للمحافظة على جذوره الأرمنية.
كتب سارويان بغزارة وتقلب بين مختلف الأنماط الأدبية، من المسرح إلى الرواية، والقصة والسيرة الذاتية، وتابع الكتابة حتى وفاته في عام 1981.
في كل ما كتب، حاول ساريويان أن يصور إنسان القرن العشرين في صراعه مع الغول الذي صنعه بيديه: الآلة. وعلة الرغم من أنه كتب معظم إنتاجه في وقت مبكر من هذا القرن وقبل أن يصل تعقيد الحياة الصناعية والتقدم التكنولوجي إلى ما وصل إليه الآن، إلا أن كتاباته كانت خير تعبير عن تطلع الإنسان إلى الانتصار على هذا الغول الذي صنعه بنفسه، ولكنه تنامى وكبر بحيث أخذ يسحق مل مسحة إنسانية على وجه هذه اليابسة، وهكذا جعل سارويان الموضوع الرئيسي لكل كتاباته انتصار الخير الطفولي على المجتمع المادي بكل ما فيه من شرور وفساد، فتراوحت كتاباته بين العفوية النابضة بالحياة والوجدانية التي تتدنى إلى مستوى الانغماس الهلامي بالذات الإنسانية.
في هذا الإطار تأتي مجموعة وليم سارويان القصصية التي بين أيدينا والتي حملت عنواناً عاماً كيف ترى أمريكا ابن بلدي؟ هذا بالإضافة إلى عناوين أخرى ملفتة للنظر مثل: المتسولون، البنطال المخملي المضلع، أسبرين، بائع بوالص التأمين والفلاح وتاجر السجاد، الضحك، الجواد الأبيض، الرجل الذي ترك قلبه في النجود العالية...
