وبالفعل لا يمتلك جمهور القرار الكبير إلا الأنقسام إلي فريقين: الأول يضع في الحسبان النوايا الطيبة للبطلة الأم التي مهما كان عجزها عن القيام بدورها, فقد أرهقتها "البذرة الشريرة" الرديئة منذ الميلاد وكانت تدرك طوال الوقت إجرامها اللامحدود, ولكن لا حيلة في منع البذرة من النمو, ليستشري إجرامها حتي والمؤلفة تسترجع معنا الأحداث وأدق التفاصيل نري أنه لا شئ يمكن لهذه الأم المسكينة ان تفعله بشكل مختلف لمنع أبنها من أن يصبح واحداً من هؤلاء القتلة ذوي السمعة السيئة في المدارس الثانوية الأمريكية وهو في الخامسة عشرة من عمره.
وقد يجد الفريق الثاني من القراء في إيفا البطلة أما باردة وبرودها الأمومي إجرامي ومسئول عن هياج أبنها المراهق, ويؤكدون أن هذه الأم هي الدرس المستخلص من الرواية فالأهل يحصلون علي الأطفال الذين يستحقونهم.
هل "كيفين" شرير بالفطرة, أو أن إيفا / الأم التي أعترفت أنها كانت خائفة من فكرة الأمومة, هي الملومة الأساسية عماً تحول إليه؟
هذا هو سؤال الرواية الذي فجر نوعاً جديداً من الحكي وكسر تابوها عن علاقة الأم والأبن خافت كاتبات كثيرات من الأقتراب منه.
