أودع المصنف في كتابه هذا من الكلم النبوي ألوفاً، ومن الحكم المصطفوية صنوفاً، مقتصراً فيه على الأحاديث الوجيزة، وملخصاً وفيه من المنقول والمأثور عن النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم تلك الأحاديث المعدودة من جوامع الكلم والتي قام المؤلف باستخراجها من أماكنها في بطون كتب الحديث المتشعبة، مبالغاً في تحرير التخريج مستبعداً ما كان من الأحاديث من رواية واضع أو كذاب، مستبقياً رواية الثقات فجاء الكتاب حاوياً نفائس الصناعة الحديثية ما لم يودع قبله في كتاب، ورتبه على حروف المعجم، مراعياً أول الحديث، فما بعده، تسهيلاً على الطلاب، وسمّاه "الجامع الصغير، من حديث البشير النذير"؛ لأنه مقتضب من الكتاب الكبير الذي سماه "جمع الجوامع" وقصد فيه جمع الأحاديث النبوية بأسرها.
