هذا الكتاب موسوعة حديثية، جمع فيها الإمام السيوطي "رحمه الله" ما يزيد عن عشرة آلاف حديث قولي، مرتبة على حروف المعجم، وقام بشرحها الإمام المناوي "رحمه الله" وجمع لها المعاني والألفاظ والعبارات التي تفيد وتشرح الكتاب من هنا وهناك، ثم تكلم على رجال الحديث، وآراء العلماء في الحديث ورجاله.
ثم قام المحقق بتحقيق الكتاب على خمس نسخ خطية، وبتخريج الأحاديث من مصادرها التي أشار إليها المصنف والشارح وأضاف إليها بعض المصادر الأخرى التي تيسرت له، وكذا تخريج الأقوال والأحكام التي نقلها الشارح من مصادرها، ثم توج هذا العمل بنقل آراء العلماء السابقين والمعاصرين في الحكم على كل حديث، ثم تعقيبه بالموافقة أو بالمخالفة، وإعطاء كل حديث ما يناسبه من درجة، مع توضيح السبب.
ونظرًا لضخامة هذا العمل، فسيصدر إن شاء الله على أجزاء، فكل جزء من هذا الكتاب يعتبر كتابًا مستقلًا، ليس له ارتباط بما سبقه أو بما يأتي بعده، فهي أحاديث مشروحة محققة ومخرجه، فمن أراد الاستفادة من كل جزء فليقتنه، ولا ينتظر صدور باقي الأجزاء حتى يقتني الجميع مرة واحدة، فكل جزء يحتوي على ما يقرب من ألف حديث، يزيد أو ينقص، فهذا العدد من الأحاديث يكفي من أراد الاستفادة من شرح هذا الكتاب وتخريجه والحكم على الأحاديث التي احتوى عليها.
