كلما أتسعت دائرة القراءة استطاع العقل أن يفهم الجمل التي تعبر عن الأفكار والصور والمعاني الدقيقة الغامضة وغير ذلك، ومتى تحقق هذا تصبح ممارسة القراءة عادة تؤثر في تكوين الإنسان لمواطنة صالحة للنفس ونهضة الأمم ببعد الكل عن ثالوث الأمية بمختلف أنواعها الجهل والفقر والمرض، لذا كانت هذه مقدمة كتاب ليس ككل الكتب بل هو تحريك جميع الناس للتعليم الذاتي متعة تقضي على كل أسباب التخلف، ومن هذا المنطلق كانت هذه الدراسة والمقارنة بين التشابه والاختلاف إفادة واستفادة في عولمة اليوم أكثر من أي وقت مضى، بين برامج محو الأمية في كل من مصر والمملكة المتحدة، وتكونت من ستة فصول هي كالتالي:-
الفصل الأول يتناول الإطار العام للدراسة، ومقدمة عن أهمية التعليم وتجارب الدول المتقدمة في هذا المضمار.
الفصل الثاني تناول القوى والعوامل التي تؤثر على نظام التعليم ومحو الأمية في دولتي المقارنة والجهود المبذولة في كل من مصر والمملكة المتحدة على سبيل القضاء على الأمية والفلسفة من برامج محو الأمية خلال تلك الجهود.
الفصل الثالث بعنوان برامج محو الأمية في مصر تناول برامج محو الأمية المقدمة من الهيئات الحكومية وغير الحكومية والجمعيات والمنظمات الأهلية مع التركيز على برنامج الهيئة العامة لمحو الأمية وتعليم الكبار.
الفصل الرابع بعنوان برامج محو الأمية في المملكة المتحدة وتم فيه عرض البرامج السابقة والحالية لمحو الأمية في المملكة المتحدة وبرامج تحسين المهارات والمنظمات العاملة في هذا المجال في المملكة المتحدة.
الفصل الخامس تناول نتائج وصف البرامج في دولتي المقارنة وأوجه التشابه والاختلاف فيها.
الفصل السادس والأخير التصور المقترح لبرنامج محو الأمية في مصر ويتبعه مقترحات الدراسة.
