إن عمر معاناة الجنوب مع جاره اللدود الصهيوني هو من عمر الحرب العربية-الإسرائيلية الأولى، حيث غيرت هذه المعاناة المستديمة أقدار ومصائر، وولدت أنماط حياة لا تزال مستمرة في الجنوب وفي مناطق أخرى من لبنان والعالم، وقد شهد لبنان في هذه الحقبة الزمنية أربعة اجتياحات كبيرة كان الجنوب ساحتها الرئيسية، وأطلق الإسرائيليون على كل منها اسماً معبراً: عملية الليطاني سنة 1978، عملية "سلامة الجليل" سنة 1982، عملية تصفية الحسابات سنة 1993، واجتياح عناقيد الغضب سنة 1996، هذا فضلاً على ممارسات المحتل الغاصب لأرض الجنوب وممارسات القوات الوطنية لردع الاحتلال.
وقد عقد لبنان الكثير من الاتفاقات، وعنوانها الرئيسي المسألة الجنوبية: اتفاق الهدنة سنة 1949، اتفاق القاهرة سنة 1969، اتفاق 17 أيار 1983، وتفاهم تموز 1993 وتفاهم نيسان 1996. فحلت على أرضه جيوش عربية، وأخرى متعددة الجنسيات وقوات الأمم المتحدة التي لا تزال ترابط على تخوم "حزام الأمن" بناءً للقرار 425 والصادر سنة 1978.
وكتاب "الجنوب اللبناني في مواجهة إسرائيل" يتناول في طياته كافة المواضيع السابق ذكرها ليشرح مأساة 50 عام من الصمود والمقاومة والتمادي الإسرائيلي في طموحاته التي بلغت أقصى حدها. كما ويضم ثلاث خرائط وثمانية ملاحق ومجموعة من الوثائق الهامة التي تشرح لتطور الصراع في الجنوب.
يتألف هذا الكتاب من فصلين: يتناول الفصل الأول الأحداث التي عاشها الجنوب اللبناني منذ خمسين عاماً، أي منذ نكبة فلسطين حتى اليوم، فيوثقها ثم يحلل أبعادها وتطوراتها. ويتحدث الفصل الثاني عن مشاريع إسرائيل للانسحاب من الجنوب، إضافة إلى دراسة وافية للقرار 425 ومواقف الأطراف المعنية. والكتاب معزز بثلاث خرائط، وثمانية ملاحق تضم مجموعة من الوثائق المهمة عن تطور الصراع في الجنوب اللبناني.
