هذا الكتاب أردته كتاب مطالعة مدرسية، يرجع إليه طلبة صفوف المرحلة الثانوية لمساعدتهم على إثراء ثقافتهم الوطنية والتاريخية، حيث أن المقاومة موضع احترام وإجماع وطني لم يختلف عليها اثنان من اللبنانيين.
ويمتاز هذا الكتاب بخصائص عدة، أهمها: 1- ذكر أحداث وسير لم تؤرخ من قبل، مثل (البقاع في العهد الفيصلي، وسيرة ملحم قاسم المصري...)، 2-يعالج هذا الكتاب تاريخ لبنان في حقبة طويلة، نسبياً وهي مئة عام، 3-تأريخ كل مقاومة نشأت، وإبراز أولى عملياتها، وشهدائها الأوائل، وأهم عملياتها الجهادية، 4-إبرازنصوص للمطالعة، تثري النص التاريخي، وتضعنا في أجواء الحدث، فنقطع بذلك رتابة السرد التاريخي، 5-سهولة العبارة، وعدم التخلي عن الإمتاع الأدبي، من دون أن يكون ذلك مخلاً بجدية المتن ونصوصه العلمية.
هذا وقد عانيت خلال فترة كتابة المتن من تقسيم الكتاب إلى فصول، وإن كانت عناوين الدروس واضحة في ذهني، فكاتب التاريخ يجد صعوبة عادة في وضع خط فاصل بين حقبتين تاريخيتين حين يتغير منحنى التاريخ من اتجاه إلى آخر.
والكتاب يقسم إلى أربعة وعشرين فصلاً، يمكن تقسيمها إلى أبواب أربعة: الباب الأول: لبنان والمنطقة في أواخر العهد العثماني وعهد الانتداب الفرنسي. الباب الثاني: عهد الاستقلال، الباب الثالث: من الاجتياح حتى الانسحاب الأول، الباب الرابع: من الإنسحاب الأول حتى التحرير.
