إن هذا الكتاب محاولة لإحياء ذكرى هذا الرائد والكاتب المؤسس وأيضاً محاولة لرد الاعتبار إليه حيث غيب الإعلام الرسمي متعمداً عرض أعماله وإنجازاته التي هي الأساس والبداية لأدبنا المصري المعاصر في الرواية والمسرح والمقال الأدبي.
ويناقش الكتاب ولأول مرة بالتفصيل والوقائع والوثائق الموقف السياسي لتوفيق الحكيم وهي قضية غابت عن كثير من نقاد توفيق الحكيم الذين اتهموه بأنه كاتب البرج العالي فيحصد موقفه السياسي من (عودة الروح) وترحيبه بثورة 1919 والنظام الليبرالي والدستوري، ثم نقده للفساد الحزبي والصراع على كرسي البرلمان والوزارة ويورد وثيقة هامة للحكيم كتبها عام 1938 ينقد النظام الليبرالي، ثم يصل إلى كتابة (عودة الوعي) الذي نقد فيها صورة يوليو 52 والزعيم عبد الناصر ومدى البلبلة والخلط الذي تعرض له الحكيم من هجوم من جانب اليسار الناصري والمركسي ويحاول أن يوضح موقف الحكيم ويصل إلى كتابته لبيان الكتب والأدباء الذي تفاعل مع الانتفاضات الطلابية والعمالية عام 1972 مما يؤكد أن الحكيم ظل طوال عمره يشارك بالرأي والكتابة في قضايا الواقع السياسي غير أنه مميز عن جيله من الرواد مثل طه حسين والعقاد وهيكل في أنه لم يكن يعتمد على حزب سياسي بل كان يواجه إشكاليات السياسية من موقف الكاتب المستقل.. المبدع، لذلك نعرض لعدم الفهم.
