يناقش الكتاب ولأول مره بالتفصيل والوقائع والوثائق الموقف السياسي لتوفيق الحكيم وهي قضية غابت عن كثير من نقاد توفيق الحكيم الذين اتهموه بأنه كاتب البرج العالي فيحصد موقفه السياسي من(عودة الروح)وترحيبه بثورة 1919 والنظام الليبرالي و الدستوري ..ثم نقده للفساد الحزبي والصراع علي كراسي البرلمان والوزارة ويورد وثيقة هامة للحكيم كتبها عام1938 ينقد النظام الليبرالي.. ثم يصل الي كتابه (عودة الروح) الذي نقد فيها ثورة يوليو52 والزعيم عبد الناصر ومدي البلبلة والخلط الذي تعرض له الحكيم من هجوم من جانب اليسار الناصري والماركسي ويحاول أن يوضح موقف الحكيم ويصل الي كتابته لبيان الكتاب والأدباء الذي تفاعل مع النتفاضات الطلابية والعمالية عام1972 مما يؤكد أن الحكيم ظل طوال عمره يشارك بالرأي والكتابة في قضايا الواقع السياسي غير أنه مميز عن جيله من الرواد مثل طه حسين والعقاد وهيكل في أنه لم يكن يعتمد علي حزب سياسي بل كان يواجه اشكاليات الساسية من موقف الكتاب المستقل..المبدع, لذلك نعرض لعدم الفهم.
إن هذا الكتاب محاولة لإحياء ذكري هذا الرائد والكتاب المؤسس وأيضا محاولة لرد الاعتبار اليه حيث غيب الاعلام الرسمي متعمدا عرض أعماله وانجازاته التي هي الأساس والبداية لأدبنا المصري المعاصر في الرواية والمسرح والمقال الأدبي.
