حاول الكاتب في هذا السفر أن يعرض لموضوع الكتابة بشكل مستجد يجمع فيه بين المعاناة لهم، والممارسة كفن. فجاء عمله متقناً لأنه مزيج من الأصالة، والحداثة على تباعدهما.
عرض المؤلف لصناعة الكتابة، وفن التعبير مستلهماً الأسس، والأصول، وأمات الكتب في فني المنثور، والمنظور. فبدأ بالسهل، وجاز إلى المعقد، لأنها الطريقة الأنجح لتركيز الأفهام، واستثارة السلائق. لاحظ الحروف وتوزيعها، والكلمات وتشكلها، وانتهى بالنصوص. كما عرض للأوزان، والمصادر، والجموع، والصرف، والأخطاء الشائعة، والمعجمات. فضلاً عن الأساليب واختلافها إلى جانب مباحث الألفاظ، والمعاني، والفصاحة، والبلاغة، كمقدمات لعلوم: المعاني، والبيان، والبديع. أما عرضه فكان سلساً على رغم مواد الموضوع الجافة. وقد عرج إلى شق الشعر فعالج العروض علماً، وأسساً. وفصّل القول فيه بحديثه عن الشائع، والمهمل، والشاذ. ولم ينس أن يتصدى للشعر الحديث مختتماً فصول الشعر.
وختاماً إنها محاولة هادفة تستوعب ما تقدم عليها، وتغني عن غيرها بعفوية، وسهولة، وإحاطة.
