جاء الكتاب في خمسة فصول، فضلاً عن المقدمة والخاتمة، كان الأول منها بعنوان "الكتابة والتعبير"، حيث وضحنا مفهوم كل منهما، وبيّنا ما بين المفهومين من خصوص وعموم. وفي الفصل الثاني "مبادئ لغوية" كان لا بد من وقفة مع أشهر الأخطاء اللغوية الشائعة، والصعوبات التي تواجه الطالب في مهاراتي القراءة والكتابة، وبعض القضايا الإملائية وعلامات الترقيم.
أما الفصل الثالث فقد خصص لبعض جماليات الكتابة، بهدف تعريف الطالب بما يحتاجه من أساليب بيانية وبديعية في البلاغة، دون الدخول في التفاصيل والتعريفات عند البلاغيين المتأخرين، مع التركيز على التذوّق.
وجاء الفصل الرابع "التعبير الوظيفي" ليتعرّف الطالب بأشهر أشكال الكتابة الوظيفية التي يحتاج إليها في حياته، كالدعوة، والاستدعاء، وملء نماذج الطلبات المختلفة، والتقرير، ومحضر الاجتماع، والسيرة الذاتية، والرسالة الإدارية أو الرسمية، وقد ضربنا صفحاً عن التعرّض لبعض الفنون الوظيفية التي ما عادت الحاجة إليها قائمة، كالبرقية والرسالة الشخصية، حيث وفرت وسائل الاتصال الحديثة بدائل لها.
وأخيراً عرضنا في الفصل الخامس لأشهر فنون التعبير الإبداعي التحريرية والشفوية، كالقصة، والمسرحية، والمقالة، والخاطرة، والبحث والسيرة الغيرية، والإلقاء بصوره المختلفة، كالخطابة، والقصّ، وإلقاء الشعر، والتمثيل، والمرافعة، والإلقاء في الإذاعة والتلفاز، والمحاضرة، والمناظرة، مع التركيز على فن الخطابة.
