يضم هذا الكتاب بين طياته دراسة اهتمت بمعالجة موضوع النحو العربي في تاريخه، هذا ويمكن القول انطلاقاً من المنهج المتبع، ومن الحقائق التي كشف عنها: إن البحث قد حاول معالجة كل ما يتعلق بموضوع النحو، دون إقحام، أو إسقاط على واقع هذا الموضوع البالغ الأهمية على صعيد الثقافة في العصر الإسلامي وما تلاه.
بناء على ما تقدم، تم التمهيد لبحث الموضوع بالحديث عن الوضع اللغوي عند قدامى العرب، لتسليط الأضواء على الجوانب المتصلة بالموضوع والتي كانت، أسساً له، ثم تتابع سرد التفصيلات المتعلقة به حتى تم استعراض كل ما يتعلق به.
وفي الباب الأول والمعنون بـ"نشأة النحو بين التسمية والتأصيل" فتمت الإشارة إلى التسمية ومعناها ومكانة وحدّ هذا العلم من اللغة، وماهيته. كما وتم استعراض أنواع النحو وغايته، والسليقة ودورها، ومكانة كل منهما بالنسبة للغة.
ومع الباب الثاني وعنوانه "العوامل التي أدت إلى وضع النحو العربي" فتم عرض موضوع انتشار اللحن وأسبابه الداعية إلى وجود، كما وتم عرض نظرية تؤكد على وجود اللحن في الشعر الجاهلي مع الأمثلة الدمغة على ذلك رداً من ينكر ذلك وينفيه تماماً. كما وتم التحدث عن منشأ اللحن ومسبباته مع مقارنة اللحن بالخطأ لوضع الفارق بينهما. ومن فصل آخر تم عرض أقسام اللحن وأنواعه وتوزيعات.
أما في الباب الثالث المرسوم "أثر القرآن في وضع النحو" فقد أفرد للحديث عن أثر القرآن في معالجة اللحون الطارئة بعد وصول اللحن إلى آياته. ودور القرآن في تثبيت لهجة قريش كعامل وحيد دون أي شيء آخر. أما الباب الرابع "تأريخ النحو العلمي" تم التحدث عن أسباب وضع النحو مع الدؤلي، وماهية العلم عنده وسبب إيجاده للنحو بين سيل من الروايات المتضاربة، كما وتم التطرف في هذا الباب لأعمال مرحلة النحو الأولى مع اللبنات الأولى في الإعراب بالعلامات والحركات، وتم تبيان أسباب اعتماد حركات الأواخر من الكلمات، وأخيراً تم عرض أخبار وضع النحو مع المتقدمين والمحدثين باستقصاء تام يعتمد المنهج المتبع في تقسيمهم إلى: مواقف، ومشترط، ورافض.
