المدرسة العقلية هو اسم يطلق على ذلك التوجه الفكري الذي يسعى إلى التوفيق بين نصوص الشرع وبين الحضارة الغربية والفكر الغربي المعاصر، وذلك بتطويع النصوص وتأويلها تأولاً جديداً يتلاءم مع المفاهيم المستقرة لدى الغربيين، ومع انفجار المعلومات والاكتشافات الصناعية الهائلة في هذا العصر، وتتفاوت رموز تلك المدرسة تفاوتاً كبيراً في موقفها من النص الشرعي، ولكنها تشترك في الإسراف في تأويل النصوص، سواء كانت نصوص العقيدة، أو نصوص الأحكام، أو الأخبار المحضة، وفي ردما يستعصي في تلك النصوص على التأويل.
وقد شكلت هذه المدرسة نموذجاً علمياً مبكراً. حاول أن يوفّق بين "النقل" أو "الدين" بما يمثله من نص إلهي، وبين "العقل" أو "الواقع الراهن" أو "العصر" بما تمثله من كسب إنساني وضعي، وخرجت باجتهادات عديدة طرحتها في سياق رؤية تجديدية امتدت آثارها إلى واقعنا الحالي، بحيث لا تخلو دراسة معاصرة تدّعي التجديد من الاستعانة بهذه المدرسة أو بأدواتها الاجتهادية وقد تعرضت هذه المدرسة لدراسات كثيرة، مجتمعة بأشخاصها الثلاثة (جال الدين الأفغاني، الأستاذ محمد عبده، والشيخ محمد رشيد رضام. أو بشكل منفرد كل على حده. وتكاد هذه الشخصيات لا تنفصل في الذكر عن بعضها البعض. بحيث أصبح لهذه الشخصيات الثلاثة، شخصية اعتبارية واحدة، أطلقت عليها أسماء مختلفة منها اسم مدرسة المنار.
من أبرز الدراسات المعاصرة المميزة التي تعرضت لهذه المدرسة، هي دراسة الدكتور "فهد الرومي" الذي تناول الجانب التفسيري عند هذه المدرسة في كتابه "منهج المدرسة العقلية الحديثة في التفسير"، ولم يقتصر على مدرسة المنار (السيد الأفغاني والسيد عبده والشيخ رضا) التي هي نواة المدرسة العقلية الحديثة، إنما تعدى ذلك إلى بعض تلامذة هذه المدرسة المشهورين المحسوبين عليها بشكل ما وبالرجوع إلى مضمون الدراسة التي بين أيدينا نجد أن "شفيق بن عبد الله شقير" قد تناول فيها الجانب الحديثي (أي ما يختص بالحديث النبوي الشريف) فقط وهذا الموضوع لم يتطرق إليه أحد بدراسة منفصلة خاصة، كما وأقصر دراسته على مدرسة المنار، كما وعنى بشكل خاص بموقف الشيخ "محمد رشيد رضا من الحديث النبوي في تفسير المنار، هذا بالإضافة لتعرضه للسيد جمال الدين الأفغاني بشكل عرضي، لأن إرثه المكتوب قليل جداً، وفي علم الحديث يكاد ينعدم، أما الأستاذ محمد عبده فلم يكن له عناية بهذا العلم أيضاً، إلا أنه كان له بعض الأثر العميق في نفس تلميذه الشيخ "رضا" من هذه الجهة.
