يقوم منهج هذا المعجم في علوم البلاغة على نقب كل فن من فنون البديع والبيان والمعاني في مصادرها، واستخلاص الرأي من منابعه، وذكر القاسم المشترك الذي تلتقي عنده الآراء وتتماسك بقوة، وتبين عملية التطور أو توضح المعنى الاصطلاحي الذي توصل إليه المتأخرون. كما ويحتوي على ثمانمائة واثنين وأربعين مادة، مرتبة ترتيباً هجائياً لتسهل مراجعه المطلع للفن المطلوب، وشمل أجزائه في مادة واحدة. وجَمْع الآراء الواحدة في الفن الواحد تفيد مؤلف البلاغة، ومن يهتم بالمقارنة بين الفنون عند العرب وغيرهم كالفرس واليونان والهنود، الذين قيل إن لهم أثراً كبيراً في نشأة الفن وتطوره خلال القرون، وارتباط المصطلحات بالمتقدمين منذ عهد الصحابة، والأوائل كالخليل بن أحمد، وسيبويه، والأصمعي وغيرهم ممن لم يدرسوا بلاغة أرسطو، أو يطلعوا على صحف الفرس والهنود. كما وذكر هذا المعجم مدى تأثر اللاحقين بالسابقين إلى جانب تقريب فنون البلاغة ودمجها بالنصوص لتؤدي خدمة جليلة لمن يريد أن يكتشف بنفسه هذا الفن قبل أنْ يعود إلى الكتب، ويقف على الأساليب التي ترصد التطور التاريخي، وبفضل هذا المنهج تسهل العودة إلى الفنون البلاغية، وتكثر الفائدة من المصادر والمراجع التي استعملتها المؤلفة في "المعجم المفصل".
