إذا تأملنا عنوان الكتاب (أدب الكاتب) وجدنا الكثير من الباحثين يسارعون بأيديهم وأذهانهم للبحث فيه على أساس أنه كتاب أدب، يتناول دروب ذلك الفن ومسالكه، ولكنهم يصابون بخيبة الأمل، عندما يدركون أنه كتاب لغة، فإذا ما حاولوا الانتفاع به احتاجوا إلى الجهد والعناء وإشحاذ الذهن حتى يتسنى لهم الغوص في أبوابه، وذلك أنه كتاب لغة، يحمل منها ما يحتاج إلى سبر الغور والتنقيب والتمحيص في تلك اللغة الحية المتطورة، وعلى الرغم من أن اللغة العربية كانت اللغة الرسمية في تلك الآونة - أعني القرن الثالث الهجري الذي عاش فيه ابن قتيبة - وفي تلك الأقاليم الإسلامية الجديدة، وعلى الرغم من توافر العلماء على دراستها والتأليف فيها واصطناعها في الآداب، لم تسلم من انتشار اللحن والتغيير والانحراف على ألسنة العامة، بل على ألسنة الخاصة كذلك، فكان هذا الذي دفع ابن قتيبة لتأليف "أدب الكاتب" هو أن يأخذ بأيدي هؤلاء الكتاب وغيرهم ممن يجهلون الفروق الدقيقة بين الألفاظ ومدلولاتها، فلا يستطيعون التفريق بينها وبين مدلولاتها، ومن لم يكن هدف ابن قتيبة وغيره ممن ألفوا في لحن العامة أن يسجلوا لنا شيئاً من مظاهر تطور اللغة، بل كان همهم الأكبر هو إعادة هؤلاء الخارجين على الفصحى إلى حظيرة اللغة القديمة.
ولأن كتاب "أدب الكاتب" لابن قتيبة لم يأخذ حظه حتى الآن من العناية، وإذا كان كذلك لم يشغل ابن قتيبة نفسه بتعليل بعض الظواهر اللغوية، قدر اهتمامه بالحصر والاستشهاد على استعمالها فقط، فإن هذا البحث يحاول أن يكشف عن بعض جوانب هذا التطور الذي حدث آنذاك، بالإضافة إلى تفر ابن قتيبة بتصويت الألفاظ التي يخطئ فيها عامة زمانه وخاصتهم فهو بمثابة المرشد اللغوي الذي يرشد إلى سنن الصواب، كما أن هذا البحث أراد أن يميط اللثام عن الظواهر اللغوية "الصوتية والدلالية والنحوية والصرفية" التي كثيراً ما كان ابن قتيبة يتعرض لها ويستشهد على صحة ما يقول بالقرآن الكريم، والحديث النبوي الشريف، والشعر العربي.
