عرَف عن الكاتب المصري شريف حتاتة رصده للجوانب المظلمة من الواقع وإضاءتها وخاصة تلك التي تتعلق بالخارجين عن السائد والمألوف والقائلين يقول الحق فيكون مصيرهم السجن. في روايته ("الهزيمة" أو العين ذات الجفن المعدني) يرصد الكاتب حيوات مجموعة من السجناء أصابتهم لعنة الحياة أو لعنة الأفكار أو اللعنتان معاً، ورسمت لكل منهما مسارها المتعثر ومصيرها الفاجع، ولكن شريف حتاتة لم يشتغل على الظاهر فقط، بلً غاص داخل النفس الإنسانية بتسليطه الضوء على حياة بطله "عزيز" الذي كان واحداً من ضحايا القمع السياسي في ستينات وسبعينات القرن المنصرم في مصر، حيث تسلل الكاتب داخل نفسه في ظلام السجن وصور لنا شعوره أثناء تجربته داخل المعتقل، ثم ما لبث أن خلص بطله وجعله يفرَ من السجن "ركب القطار إلى نجع حمادي في نفس اليوم... بطيء... يتلوى فوق القضبان... شيء ثقيل في قلبه كالحجرة، استقرت ولا تريد أن تتزحزح... نعم خرجوا إلى الحياة.. ولكن كم من الحدائق جفت.. وكم من الزهور ماتت...".
